About myself

Welcome to my little corner of the ’net – I'm James Greenaway.

James Greenaway

Author, dream–weaver, visionary plus software developer (meme source )

Designing since IE7

I’m a UK-based senior design engineer building at the intersection of UX and software development. I’m especially excited by AI as a creative amplifier — tools that help people bring ideas to life, not just get more done.

I’m a traditionally trained graphic designer who taught himself to code many moons ago. I like turning messy problems into delightful experiences. I’m passionate about craft and collaboration.

Check out my now page to see what I’m up to at the moment.

What I’m into

  • I write every day.
  • Collecting too many Polaroid cameras and fonts.
  • Repairing typewriters, cameras & vintage Macs.
  • Noodling with Linux and making computers my children.
  • Making zines that nobody reads.

Friendly Computer

I use design and development to help non-technical founders test ideas quickly. Friendly Computer is my small practice — I partner with early-stage startups to go from idea → delightful v1.

If you’ve got a product you want to bring to life, that’s the place to start.

Career

I’ve shipped compliance tools that fight financial crime and built art installations for Twitter, The Times, and apps for Sundance Film Festival. I’ve been awarded a D&AD Yellow Pencil and have given university lectures on UX research and design methodology.

Day-to-day I mostly work in React/Next.js, TypeScript, and Go — design systems, component libraries, frontend architecture, and big product problems.
